I am not sure how to answer this. I am religious and spiritual and I could never kill anyone. Now if someone was intruding into my home I think I would have to take action, I wouldn't let someone just kill me because I was too scared to break a commandment. That is just my thought.

Well, first of all, not every country has every citizen with a mini armory at home.
many European countries for example have private ownership of firearms declared illegal.
One excuse some will use - is that " they " didn`t kill the animals that they eat, so they are innocent. Hogwash, i know, but still - some people do claim it.
Also, as to killing burglars - weird as it may sound, but isn`t that the risk of the job?
If you don`t want to get shot - stay out of peoples properties. No compassion for them from my end.

The real translation of the Hebrew text should be "You shall not murder". The newer translations (New International Version, etc.) of the Bible have corrected this error that shows up in the 1611 King James Version. It wasn't translated from the original Hebrew or Greek texts, but from the Latin texts of the Catholic Church.
God said that it was wrong to lie in wait to murder someone. He never said it was wrong to defend yourself in the Old Testament where this commandment comes from, especially since when the Israelites entered Canaan, they set up flight cities where someone could flee to until there was trial to decide if a murder had taken place and if it hadn't, then the person could live there without the dead person's family taking revenge.
Jesus did say later in the Gospels that we should turn the other check if someone hits the one side. However, that doesn't mean we should allow an enemy to come and destroy this country and not have an army to defend it since Paul also wrote in Romans chapter 13 that we should obey the government authorities who would have us serve to protect the country and its citizens. It is not murder to kill during a time of war if the country calls us to do so.
According to most state laws of the US, it isn't murder to defend your home and family from attacking intruders who would rob, rape and kill. God allows for the government to decide what justice is in cases like this and therefore, will not hold someone accountable if they are following their conscience clearly before Him. There have been many times people have had bad guys give up in the face of a weapon pointed at them instead of going through with their plan of evil. I don't think Jesus on Judgement Day would judge someone worthy of Hell for keeping their family safe, even if it meant they had to kill someone to do it. Turning the other check stops when someone else is being hurt or killed.
Remember this too, when Jesus returns to earth at the Battle of Armeggedon, He will kill all the armies assembled there in order to rescue Israel and it will take 6 months to bury the dead. If killing to defend someone was wrong, He certainly wouldn't do it because it would violate His own commandment.

The ten commandements are there to show us our falibility and need for a Saviour.
Ask yourself these questions:
Have you ever told a lie? (even once)
Have you ever stolen something? (the cost is irrevelent)
Have you ever commited adultery? (Jesus said "whoever looks at a women to lust after her, has already commited adultery with her in his heart" - Matthew 5:28)
Be truly honest with yourself. You know you will be guilty on judgement day, and therefore end up in hell. Does that concern you? Today, repent (confess and turn away from your sin) and trust in Jesus Christ. He died on the cross for punishment for these sins that we should have payed for. He then rose from the dead. He showed how much God loves us, by stepping in and taking our place. Read the Bible daily and obey what you read! God will never fail you!

Baby....ever read about the Crusades? how about the Spanish in Mexico and the western United States. Eurpoeans have been killing "heretics" (translate to non-Christian) for centuries. Best part about it? All in the name of God and the Holy Church.
Although there can be any interpretation of the Commandmants, I suspect this related to killing someone for gain or in anger.
However if you're a good Christian and doing the work of the Pope under the banner of the church and God to rid the land of heathens..well....it was okay then.
How's that for a double standard?

You may write this while eating a hamburger and shinning yoru leather purse. Those came from dead animals as well.
Now, that's a double standard.
If you are so concerned about killing animals, become a vegetarian, instead of preaching about this and then go to KFC later.

because there are also 'laws of the land' killing just to be doing it is wrong, killing as in 'hunting' for food consumption and survival is not, and there are several instances in the bible where God himself commanded kill before being killed

If you keep the commandments so well then I suppose Jesus didn't need to die for you.
The Torah was given to show us that we need a saviour.
