Its never to late. If they merge soon and do a 60-40, or 50-50 schedule merge they could come back. Nascar is over exposed, and while I like it if open wheel becomes competitive on the track I would watch those races more often and attend more often. They will only merge again when of the companies is on the brink of going under though, its going to take that for the two leagues to realize they are killing a sport.

If they merge, then there will be one less series in open wheel. I think that Indy and Champ Car should stay separate. By the way, there are 17 races for Indy, I don't really know too much about Champ car, but I think that it is true that NASCAR will probably take out Open wheel, but I don't want 42 cars racing in one series. I like to know a little bit more about each driver. I like the smallish atmosphere.

I don't know that your question really has an answer. The two series are about as different as night and day. Champ Car is now more of a competitor of F1 than IRL. Champ Car is gearing towards an international presence - similar to F1. Champ Car's tracks and status is just so different than IRL that I don't think that a merger will ever make sense. In fact, I wonder the longevity of the Champ Car series given their cancelled races and such.
Just to clarify, though open wheel racing has never been about number of cars on the track. That has just become a phenomenon with the popularity of Nascar. In fact, you don't want a lot of Indy Cars on the track as somebody will wind up in a world of hurt with too much traffic on the field going at speeds in excess of 200 MPH.

Never. Both sides are far enough apart that merging is simply not going to happen. What *will* happen eventually is that Champ Car will die out, and IndyCar will be left as the sole American top open-wheel series. That opinion is based on the fact that IndyCar "has" the Indy 500 and Champ Car doesn't. Unfortunately for the sport, CC's death is still years away.

I fear-and I say this as a Champ Car fan-that it may take one series-Champ Car-dying and the IRL taking over its assets. There have been stop-and-start efforts to try to bring the two series together, a necessity, but mostly it seems ego and money are the dividing factors. Given Champ Cars many foibles-cancelling races, hiring drivers based solely on money brought, et al-I'm betting that CC is the one that falls and the teams that are in the series may try to join the IRL when that happens.

You know I barely watch open wheel racing, but that is a thought. They are never going to catch NASCAR if they don't hook up, and why not travel with the NASCAR series on say weekends, in which the BUSCH and TRUCK races are elsewhere, it might bring fans to eachother from both sides, who knows, there are ways for these companies to get where they need to be, but honestly they need better marketing people and to not be agraid to try joint ventures, I think it would be awsome to go to Lowes, or Texas and watch a Busch Race on Friday, a open wheel event on Saturday and then some cup racing on sunday.

just because you cant buy champ car merchandise in walmart and you cant find the channel in your trailer park doesn't mean that champ car is dying. get out of Alabama once in a while and see how popular open wheel racing is throughout the world before you try and slam open wheel racing and praising stock car boringness, open wheel racing has been around long before nascar.

good question. I've been hearing that they were supposidly gonna merge back in 2004. I agree with ya. I think even if they were to merge NASCAR has the momentum of a runaway freightrain and it may already be too late.
