Yes. Microsoft makes two versions of Office. One for Windows and one for Mac. The Windows version is always an odd number (2003, 2007, etc.) The Mac version is always an even number (2004, 2008, etc.) You can go to an Apple store and buy Microsoft Office for Mac 2008 that comes with Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Entourage (like Outlook). As an alternative, you can buy Apple's iWork '09 that comes with Pages, Numbers and Keynote. They can open and write to Office file formats. Hope this helps!

There's a new version of Office for Mac 2008 coming out in a couple months, if you have $$$. The new Apple iWorks 08 which is under $80 will open and format files in Word, Excel or Powerpoint formats. The free Text Edit program on the Mac will open Word files.

OpenOffice.org is already available for the Mac. It's the standard. You should use it by all means.
(Microsoft is jealous. Microsoft even lost international lawsuits, and thus OOo document formats will be PREFERRED over MS ... that is, the form in which the files are stored. And the resulting files are much more compact, for the same documents. However, much of the world is USED TO using Word, so it'll take awhile for OOo to get popular.)
If you wish to wait, IBM has released a package for Windows, and will soon release a version for Mac, that is based on the OOo document format. It's called Lotus Symphony. While it's more of a CPU and memory user, it has a slicker GUI. (I have a copy of each...both are free).
