Now i would suspect no doubt that there a many individuals who would condemn this culprit to nothing more than a flagrant dingbat. The nature of this misdeed unquestionably raises some serious questions as to why so many vehicle manufacturers endeavour to make cars as fast as possible when the speed limit is only 70. Yet on the other hand why spend 100k on a car capable of excessive speeds without pushing the envelope on a quiet road? All im saying is it is wrong but by god is it tempting.............

There are areas of the world without speed limits (German autobahn for example) and there are people who want fast cars!

If there was not a market for the car, the manufacturers would not make it. The problem is not the car, it is the nut behind the wheel!

Why purchase a car capable of going over 70? Well, first off, you would be hard pressed to find a car that maxed out at 70mph... and then you would have to consider if 70mph was the maximum speed limit everywhere the car was sold or would be driven (keeping in mind the car mentioned is made in a country that has some roads without speed limits). On top of that, would the inability of a car to go 71mph be safe? Even if not for actual acceleration, you would then be at the maximum speed and unable to use the throttle to shift the balance of the car to the back wheels?

None of which begins to address the fact that while the speed limit may be 70mph, is that the actual speed of traffic? I cannot speak for the area where this happened, but from areas I travel I would say generally that the speed limit tends to often fall somewhere around the absolute minimal speed.

Lastly, as someone that spends a great deal of time invovled with the Porsche marquee, instructing at track events, I can say there are many opportunities to use cars like this at high speeds! Though I would also add 170mph on public roads is not too smart (ok, downright dumb).

Which goes to the second question... Why spend that money and not push the envelop? Simply because a quiet road is not the place to do that... and because a high speed is not exactly "pushing the envelop" - it's simply going fast without regard for others.

I ask myself that same question. I live a a huge city where I see nice cars that are made for speed. But what is the point of getting a fast car when there is constantly traffic or lights everywhere.

To me its only a status thing to show that Im rich and can afford a car like that. Its one thing to have one where there are open roads where you can push it but in a city where there is no place to open up, pointless.

Well, in theory at least, you can drive it within the speed limit on the roads and then take it out on the track at the weekend.
Or, if he had of done that on the Autobahns in Germany, where they have no speed limit, das is no problem, ya?

But still, What a pillock.

i'm with fire 4511 also there is a BIG ticket waiting for the nuts who drive that fast. My VW was pushed to about 100 to 110 mph in a 55 MPH zone (I 270 in Maryland), I got 6 tickets from a state smokey along w/ 6pts on a Commercial Driver License.

The funniest thing was that it wasn't even his car, he 'borrowed' it without his bosses permission, so as well as being banged-up, he will have lost his job as well.
On a more serious note, a custodial sentence for speeding is way out of order considering some of the lenient sentences handed out by our out-of-touch judges for really heinous crimes like mugging and violent assault. A quick tap on the wrist is often all they get.

Go to Germany if you want to push your machine. No speed limits on certain roads.

I could get 140 mph out of my turbo fireblade down my road!!!

The trick is ... NOT to get caught. I have been over 200 mph on British roads. Never been caught though. Pick your moments???

They are status symbols..

You pull up in a Porsche and see what sort of women you take home.

You pull up in a mondeo and then see what sort of women or creature you take home!!
