It is a great idea. And there is a good chance someone can do it. SpaceX has offered a 10% discount off the $7 million price of a launch on their new Falcon 1 rocket and a number of others companies have offered other kinds of help. Building the rover should be no problem since similar rovers have already operated on Mars. Those are so expensive only because of the inefficient way the government does things. A well run private company that keeps costs in mind could do it cheaply enough to make it worth while.

It seems like a ridiculously small amount of money for the task by just like the Ansari prise won by Burt Rutan it's prestige thing or at least a small payback.

There was a company a few years ago that was trying to find backers to put a rover on the Moon with a live camera. The idea was that people would pay top dollar to steer the thing around the Moon from an amusement part type ride and they would be able see where they were going in real time. The idea never got off the ground and the company went out of business.

I liked the idea, but frankly, I think they should have more of a mission plan. It'd be good if they could use the mission to further manned exploration - mapping possible sites for a base, for example.
