the intel C2D E6600 is a great affordable chip for a desktop performing those tasks. Pair it up with a good motherboard and it will work wonders.

I agree with the concept of buying the fastest processor that you can afford.

However, within that thought, you are stating gaming and some intensive programs so I'd recommend that you do your homework and spend a few bucks on a video card that will do the job also.

The CPU isn't the only factor to consider for good performance for all the things you want to do.

If you can't afford everything at once, go for the CPU first, and upgrade your video later on. The CPU is certainly a key in what you want for performance.

Based on what you want to do with your computer, a dual core or quad core processor will do what you want and then some, however its nothing if you do not have enough ram, go for 4GBs of RAM and a 512MB video card, you should be set for a long time before you will need to make a significant upgrade.

A dual core, AMD or Intel, and as fast as you can afford. The more you spend on the cpu, the longer it will be usable before you have to replace it.
