There is no difference between a groundhog and a woodchuck. Just two different names for the Eastern Marmot.
The person who said that groundhogs are male woodchucks is incorrect - the term groundhog is used for both male and female. But that person is correct about the damage done to pastures by the groundhog.
Groundhogs can be very tame creatures - when we had our farm, we had a family of groundhogs living under our shed, and they would come out and "join us" for dinner at the picnic table. We would put piles of cauliflower, sweet potatoes, broccoli, carrots and corn on the cob down on the ground about 5-10 feet away from the table, and they would have their "dinner" while we had ours. They never approached any closer, and we never approached them. We had a very happy coexistence. I really miss them now that we live in a development.

Where I come from, people would say it's the same difference. Which means they are one and the same. Some people in some parts of the country say groundhog, some say woodchuck.

not very knowledgable about these animals. (tho I have alot of them in my yard and they are cute) but groundhogs don't like water. don't woodchucks like water? or there is a saying how much wood can a woodchuck chuck if a wood chuck could chuck wood?
so maybe they are referring to beavers maybe? anyway whatever they are I feel sorry for them, they are always teh most animals around here getting run over.

Groundhogs are male woodchucks and the most annoying little creature that roots up pastures making them unfit for horses to live in. Sorry. But, yeah, Groundhogs are male woodchucks.

None, they are both the same critter with different names. they are also called "whistle pigs", "pasture rats" and other names.
Just what part of this answer deserves the "thumbs down", as this is not an opinion , but fact..
