Yes, rats are excellent swimmers. Have you ever heard the expression, "rats deserting a sinking ship"? Why would a rat run away from a sinking ship if they couldn't swim?

Only house-rats & wild rats cannot swim. Rest all can..even the desert rats.

Well you could always test it (hope you are not afraid of rats)
because sounds like there is some bias in these answers and it is true why would that expression exist?

Very well. I found some in my bathtub a year or so ago, and I tried fill the tub to drown them, and they all can swim.

Heck yeah they can! They can even hold their breath under water for a short time. They can come up through the sewer and come through the ubend in the pipe into a toilet (I encountered one trying to go back the way it came in to the toilet one time - and he got through!)
