Its always out of pocket, since its not manditory. It was nice, we never used the breathing exercises since I got an epidural, but you also learn what you body is going to do during delivery, and it was nice to go into labor forwarned and informed. For a first time mom its a good thing to do.

First of all, congratulations :)
I loved my Lamaze classes simply because they explained in detail everything that was happening with my body & I knew what changes were coming. What was normal vs what wasn't. It was my first (and to this date only) pregnancy so I was scared because I didn't know what to expect & the class was full of information. I had the best pregnancy :)
As far as what I learned helping me during the delivery itself, that would be "no". Once the pain started, sadly, I forgot how to breath. I would strongly recomend the epideral. But I certaintly don't feel the classes where a waste of time. They gave me peace of mind during my actual pregnancy & that is well worth it.
There are some insurance policies that are now offering "well benefits" that include lamaze classes but most typical policies don't & the cost would be out of pocket. My suggestion would be to call your insurance and ask. The worse they could say is no.
Good luck to you!

I'm not sure about the insurance part of your question but my personal opionion is that prenatal yoga is more beneficial than lamaze. All the women I know who've done lamaze abandon it in labor because they need to focus on their bodies, and lamaze tries to get you to focus elsewhere. Yoga will teach you relaxation and how to work with your body.

i took a class preparing for childbirth, it wasnt called lamaze, i had to pay for it but it wasnt very much, it was like an eight week class once a week and i think it was like $50 or something, it was at the hospital, i think it was beneficial, it helped my husband and i to get prepared and to know what to expect when the time came, i would definitely reccomend it.

I think its a waste of money if you ask me. Just get a CD on relaxation techniques at the library and listen to it. Often these tapes help with breathing techniques that can be used in the labor process.
