Is an MBA worth it for a person with an engineering background? Does anyone have any life experiences of where an MBA can take you coupled with an engineering degree?

AN MBA from a ranked school can increase your salary greatly and give you an opportunity to switch fields. The increase in salary is directly related to the quality of the program. Those going to top 10 or 15 schools can expect six figure salaries when they graduate. Salary improvements from other ranked schools are not as high -- but are enough to justify taking two years off to get the degree.

In my opinion, an MBA from a school that is not ranked is only of marginal value. It may help you get ahead in your current position -- but won't help much in switching fields or getting a new job. It could be worth it if your current firm pays for it.

The top schools want you to have three to five years of work experience, a decent GPA and a high GMAT score.

An MBA is worth it if you want to pursue management. A PhD is worth it if you want to teach at a university. If you want to stay in engineering, a BS with focused certifications is powerful enough.
