Do you have an internet connection available at home ?

Wi Fi is NOT a "wireless internet" solution, it's "Wireless LAN" for local networking. U still need an internet connection to link to

There are some free applications out there that tell you what spots you are near, what the signal strength is, if they are WEP encrypted etc. I don't make recommendation on applications because everyone likes what they like and that is usually different.

You can do the same thing manually from the driver utility of your wireless card but most people find the applications more handy if they are going around to a lot of spots since the data will get updated automatically as you move around.

Basically, there needs to be a wireless access point with Internet access within a couple of hundred feet from where you are standing with your laptop.

Just because you have wi-fi build into yer computer you still need a router/modem.

You cant just connect to the internet anywhere, you have to be in range of a wifi access point ;)
