i have an 88 s10 with a stock 94 crate 350 the timing is set at about 14 -16 degrees what should it be at, and is this hurting my mileage? thanks

Run engine up over 3000 rpm and set total timing @ 36 degrees. This is with the vaccum line disconnected from Dist. Lots of info on timing but this should get you close to what these engines like.

This can use more gas try setting the timing @ 8- 10 degrees before TDC and adjust the Carb if your running one.
if you have injection than try resetting the fuel ratio with in the
CPU for the difference in timing and your mileage should increase like about 4+ a gallon.

yes ignition timing can and does affect fuel economy. i usually set my ignition timing at 10-14 degrees initial for best power and mileage. lighting off the fuel mixture earlier does improve efficiency by allowing more of the fuel mixture to be burned creating more power. when you make more power, to a point, you need less throttle pressure to maintain speed, thus you improve fuel economy.
