My husband is convinced no one has any use for this PC and simply wants to trash it. I figure that someone can use it if only to use it for the word documents. Would my local school system or even a goodwill/salvation army store accept it happily? Any other suggestions? One problem is that we cannot perform a restoration on it because we have lost the key/code to perform this function. It is a Sony PCV-230.

Check around your area for electronic recyclers. We have one around here, and they have a truck parked at the local garbage collection site. If I was close enough to you, I would take it, because I load them up with kid games and give them out. The schools get new computers in their budget, and usually don't take them.

In most states in the US, the whole of Europe, China, Japan, Korea, etc. it is now illegal to throw a pc away!

The toxic chemicals inside the unit require special disposal, so contact your local waste authority for information.

Some museums might be interested in it for sentimental reasons but the processing power of something 10 years old will be less than you find on a hand held unit now, so it has little or no functional use.

Even the power consumption of an old unit would make it uneconomic to run.

If the OS is not working then I can't imagine any charitable organization that would want it. It's hard enough to give away an old computer if it is WORKING OK.

I recently donated one to Salvation Army and I went through it and deleted everything but the Windows programs... and they still didn't want to take it... but finally did.

I would take it and add it to my "legacy" collection.

I still use my Win98 computer for some older games; my mother-in-law has a computer that still uses Win95, and my wife's great aunt still has a computer with Win3.1 (including the installation disks)...if she'll ever get around to getting it out of storage.

Call your local school and see if they could use it. If they can't use it in a classroom, they may take it for spare parts.
