- I have replaced desktop HD's, vid cards, etc. no prob
- All I know about current HD without opening the laptop is 37GB ATA/100 and this number : ht5424040m9at00.
- How high in GB can I go?

Looks like your are now running a "PATA" (parallel) hard drive. You should be able to use just about any size drive to replace your existing drive. I would suggest a 120 or 160 gig unit.

If you wish to keep your existing setup, you will need a program like "Norton Ghost" to image your old drive onto your new one. If you don't wish to do an exact copy of the drive that you are now using you can do a complete reinstall of all your software. To do this you will need the "Restore" disks that came with the computer, and the disks to reinstall all of your software.

Be sure to back up all of your personal data to some sort of external drive before you do the reinstall.

Get a usb external. They are reasonable and easy, just plug it in.
I have 5 now and they are all dependable. Now I'm looking at the terabyte ones (:
