If so, why? I've only blocked a few people, and they were all trolls who made it a point to stalk and harass me. Do some people here wish to learn something new or maybe engage in an intelligent debate or do they merely wish to preach to the choir?

Yes - people completely incapable of debate!

But after several of my friends were targeted on here, I've closed my Q&A down to everyone. I don't like doing that - I don't like feeling like I need to "hide" my opinions - but I also don't like the fact that far too many people on here have nothing better to do than clone, troll, and try to get others suspended.

LOL And quite a few on here just want to preach to the choir. I personally enjoy a good debate!

Edit - It's Your World - when *does* it cross the line to stalking? I have a problem with some moron on 360...it's getting really really creepy!!

I think some people like to just preach to the choir. I was blocked by someone, and I wasn't stalking this person and certainly don't consider myself a troll, but I guess they didn't like the fact that I disagreed with them. They have like three hundred or so questions on here so I didn't even realize when they blocked me that I had answered so many of their questions. I guess they only wanted to hear things that supported their love for Bush. Who knows right?

I've blocked Laissez Faire Guy. To be honest, I just don't have the time to debate every conservative republican 24/7 and the dude would just not stop emailing me. Total Stalker! (JK...or am I?) I definitely enjoy the debates I have here on the boards and the exchange of ideas. But I also like finding like minded people with similar goals who wish to move America forward instead of backwards as republicans want.

Generally, I only block people I find out have blocked me.

If they remove the block, I suppose I would also.

If people don't want to hear opposing views, then what's the point?

YA is only as good as its participants.

Are we up to the task?

PS A more effective way to deal with problems is to dis-allow contacts, which unfortunately I've had to do from time to time. Until YA allows us to accept or reject each individual fan, that is.

It's a shame. I am seriously concerned that people here are purported to be rational, functioning adults in real life. It's hard to believe.

PPS I do understand the absolute frustration of people who get nothing but insults, evasions, abuse, etc. and have had enough. To each his (or her) own.

Maybe "ignoring" would be a better function to have than blocking, although I don't quite know how that would work. I'm not a computer programming expert. far from it! And I never claimed not to be "eccentric" in my ways. :)

PPPS I didn't mean to sermonize but the questions struck a nerve. Obviously each of us must decide for ourselves whether participating in YA is "worth it."

One wonders why we expect any more from our representatives in government if we can't uphold much of a standard of discourse ourselves.

All the best.

Hello Lady T

I just blocked about 5 conservatives on a question I just resolved. I asked a serious question about Iraq, and I get too many hater/jokers with crap like:

"lay off the bong"
"its time for a nap"
"youre an idiot commie lib"
etc

Yes, non-answers that only serve to insult the asker may be standard fare for some seriously dumb and/or hateful conservatives, but Ive sifted through enough trash of theirs to
know its never going to get any better WITH them, so I'll just have to do it(and fix this country) WITHOUT them.

There's someone who used to post in the V&V section and was an utter troll. He would come back with different identities, and I would keep blocking. However, blocking does not prevent you from seeing their answers or questions, but does prevent them from contacting you and adding you to their network.

I only do it for the most obnoxious trolls, and if I see their responses, and they're particularly idiotic, I give them thumbs down.

I block people who post hatred towards Christians and Jews . .. ... .There's nothing to discuss with a person like that .

I also block people who refuse to ever answer the posted question AND do post insults instead of answers . I also email them first and try to rationalize with them . I even offer to allow them to insult me as long as they answer the posted question .

I can get pretty smart-alecky , I know that . But I do answer the posted question . People who don't are disrespectful. ... . again there's nothing to discuss with people who have no respect for others nor themselves .
As much as some on the left do not like me , none of them can say that I don't answer the questions .

I also unblock people after a little while to see if they can at least post answers to the posted question . Argle Bargle is a good example of someone who got blocked twice by me . I must've told him a hundred times to answer the question and then go ahead and insult me if that's what makes him feel good .

So , it's not a matter of being willing to hear opposing views , but more of a matter of being respectful enough to answer the posted question FIRST .

I found it pointless to block any other user. Usually the rabid, incestant trolls and known partisan "bots" that I would otherwise be quick to block eventually have their accounts suspended/deleted after a while. Sooner or later, such scum of the earth would resurface with a fresh new account to spew their ridiculous and incoherent drivel.

Yes. One known stalker and others who have blocked me. Also, a few foul mouthed trolls, but they're probably no longer around. The last few who have blocked me, I haven't even bothered blocking back, simply to demonstrate how childish they are. And of course, should they show up to respond to any of my questions, I'll get a great laugh at the hypocrisy that they're displaying. :)
