Deja vu is a common human experience of feeling that what is happening in the moment has been experienced or dreamed of before. It is a perceptual or memory glitch in the brain--a misfiring of certain neurons. Although, as noted, it is just a common experience, it also does occur as a symptom of epilepsy. I had such experiences very often when young but hardly ever now.

If knowing what these episodes are doesn't calm you and if these episodes continue to go along with feelings of light-headedness, nausea, and agitation--and if there are other symptoms--you might want to describe the symptoms to a doctor.

It depends on who you are:

Some say it is caused by:

- Scientists: A memory glitch in the Brain can cause you to feel as if you've done it before.

- Reincarnation Believers: Believe that you are remembering what you've done before you were reincarnated.

Facts:

- 70% of adults have experienced Deja Vu at one time or another. (Source: Howstuffworks)
- You are more likely to experience Deja Vu if your very educated or someone who loves to travel a lot. (Source: Howstuffworks)

Some instances of deja vu are reflective of seizure activity.

Considering the concurrent physiological symptoms you experience during an episode of deja vu, you may be wise to see a neurologist to rule out the possibility of seizure disorder.

My deja vouz are fun! In fact, you can have them at your leisure if you do enjoy them when thy happen, over and over again.

Some say in the world of metaphysics that it is a guiding point to let you know that everything is going according to plan.

On the other hand you have Sigmund Freud saying that it is our own brain doing a sort of hiccup with past thoughts, desires, or memories and associating them with the present which gives us a sense of lapse in time and disassociation of one self.

I dont really agree with Freud based on my own examination and also that it is not easy to come by deja vouz and have it examined. Too hypothetical to be scientific in my opinion.

No one really knows what actually causes it.

I have read that researchers theorize that a brain misfire sends the event to the long-term memory first rather than the short-term memory as it's supposed to.

Your mind then believes that you have experienced this before (because it is recognized as being in the long-term memory), but you actually haven't. It's nothing mystical (unfortunately), just a little error.

I'm not sure you know what the phrase means: it means a feeling of having been somewhere before, or in the same situation before, when one hasn't.

A while ago I read that it's a mis-firing of the part of the brain that deals with recognition.

So you don't actually recognize the place or situation, but your brain is telling you you do.

so far everyone is wrong.....neurophysiologists conclude that the amygdala stores the event in short term memory milliseconds before the frontal cortex does the same thing, hence, when the cortex stores the event and it's already there, you experience "deja vu'" which is really only a replicated memory. try not to make a big deal out of it.
