You can rent a hammer drill and metal splitting wedges at some tool rentals. It's actually kind of fun, like splitting a large diamond. Once you get the hang of it you should be able to form useful pieces for around the garden. RScott

How solid does the rock look? If it looks like a smooth boulder that will be harder than a piece of shale that has nooks and crannies.

Cheapest is to get a steel wedge and a large mallet. Pound the wedge into any cracks you see and try to knock off corners of the big rock to make some smaller ones that you can deal with. That will be easier if the rock already has those weak seams that you can pry open. Otherwise it might pay to drill some starter holes with a carbide bit in an electric drill or with a hand held star drill bit. If you knock off some every day you will get it out in a manageable way and can avoid joining a health club for exercise.

Next alternative after that is to rent a compressor and a jack hammer for the day and pound the heck out of the rock (and your shoulder muscles) using mechanized force.

If the jack hammer is more effort than you want to put in, look in local papers for guys who advertise that they will do yard-work and see if one will smash the rock and cart it away for a price you would pay.

Established azaleas are pretty hard to move successfully at any time of year. Their roots are extensive and fragile. You'll have a better chance of survival in the fall than you will right now. They are going into their bloom period right now and probably won't like getting ripped out of the ground. You can try it, but I wouldn't give you more than a 50/50 chance of it living.

If its in asutitable place build a large garden around it, not just round or square - make it an interesting shape. Then add more rocks(various sizes) to create multi levels, fill with soil and plant it

you can rent an electric jack hammer at most local rental places. They are about 40 pounds and are on a hand cart so they can easily be moved to the site. You have to be able to lift the weight though.

good luck

If the rock is big enough, you may be able to sell it to a landscaper or supply nursery.... or you can pay a landscaper to get it out of your yard if you want it out that bad......
if you use a sledge hammer please use safety glasses and make sure everyone around has them on too(no children in the yard please). the hammer it's self may chip off (hardened steel dose that)and hit someone..
