The Final Fantasy series. These games each have an epic storyline, great characters, beautiful graphics, and fun battles. Each game in the series (with the exception of FFX-2 and the FF7 spinoffs) have their own worlds, storylines, and characters, so you can pick up and play any of the series without worrying about missing some of the story.
The God of War series. I don't want to post any spoilers, but just imagine a game where you get to fight mythological creatures and Greek gods. These games have amazing graphics, a wonderful & easy to master battle system, and some truly epic battles.
Dragon Quest 8. One of the most fun turn-based RPGs I've ever played. With a great & sometimes humorous storyline, a cool way to invent items, weapons and armor with an "alchemy pot", cool characters, and lovely cel-shaded graphics, this game is a must play.

I suspect this won't excite you in the least. RTS....Silent Hunter III and now out is SH IV.
Silent Hunter III puts you in command of a U-Boat during WW2. You can set the realisim to the point where you actually have to do algrebraic equations to figure bow angles and torpedo speed, target speed and torpedo depth to sink freighters.
The game isn't meant to be played fast and there isn't any real shoot 'em up action. You work your way out to a patrol grid and start sounding listening for propellors of merchant ships or convoys. Of course they're usually 25-30 nautical miles away when you hear them and depending on their speed you have to calculate if you can catch up and head them off to attack.
In the dynamic campaign, which starts September 1939 and ends in May 1945 you are awared renown points to upgrade your crew and boat. Medals and promotions are awarded as well if you complete a mission satisfactorily. Worth a look anyway. The game is put out by UBI. Google "Silent Hunter III" and "Silent Hunter IV" (which puts you in charge of an American sub in the Pacific Theater attacking the Japanese.

Super Mario World
Classic game that I'd played since it first came out. Basically a adventure game where Mario and Yoshi, a green little dinosaur (turns three different colors red, yellow and blue) sets out to Dinosaur Land to find Princess Peach, who been kidnapped by the evil villain Bowser, ruler of all the Koopas. Mario has to complete seven worlds and defeat Bowser's seven children in their castles. There is also a Star World, which is unlocked when finding hidden exits (or keys) in the game which reveals the 'Special Zone'. Once completed all of it, a 'surprise is in store' when Mario goes back to Dinosaur World. This only happens unless one completes all 96 exits in the game.
San Andreas
This game is set back in early 90s California (San Andreas). The character, CJ (Carl Johnson) returns home in Los Santos after the news about the death of his mother. The city is over flooded and run by the Ballas (street gang) who is in complete control and heavily in the drug business. CJ has to find a way to restore the power in his gang Grove Street Families once had. For that to happen, CJ has to take over gang turfs (Ballas and Vagos) to earn respect from GSF and wipe his rivals out. At the same time, he will be on a mission to find out the killer of his mother, run into crooked cops, deal with backstabbing friends and find new ones along the way.
I love the setting of the game as the CJ is able to work out at a gym, eat, buy clothes at several clothing stores, change hairstyles, and you can also mod a vehicle. Plus you can go to the countryside, into another state (Nevada) gamble at a casino and have six different girlfriends. Big improvement in the GTA series.
Silent Hill (original)
Unfortunately, I haven't played the rest yet but this game got me hooked since I first bought it. More scarier than Resident Evil and all those zombies. Harry Mason is the father of seven-year-old Cheryl. As the two were on their way to Silent Hill on a vacation, Harry sees a figure of a young girl appeared suddenly right in front of his Jeep. At that point everything goes blank and Harry wakes up from the 'accident' and into a strange town that is foggy, dark, snowy and gloomy. He finds out that Cheryl is missing and is on the search to find her. Along his search, he sees the figure of that same girl in front of his car, everywhere he goes.
Harry goes to a school, hospital, hotel and church looking for clues to find his missing child-- the clues which Alessa leaves behind. He meets three people, Delilah Gillespie, mother of Alessa and part of an evil cult who mission is to create the demon Samael. Doctor Kauffman is an affiliate of the cult, and distribute drugs to tourists and plays a part in Alessa's ill-treatment by the cult. Lisa Garland, a nurse who gives useful info to Harry about the background of SH, Deliah and her group. Most of the time she is hallucinated, thanks to the drugs she is given by the doctor.
The atmosphere in this game is so disturbing, especially when the town switches to an alternate world. The creatures, the music and darkness of it definitely heighten the fear factor. When Harry delves deep in the game, he will find out more than he asked for of the history of his adopted daughter, Alessa and the religious cult. SH also has five different endings from very good to very bad--depending on how you played the game.
