If you believe in your heart that you are doing something good and something you believe in - don't let anyone tell you it's stupid.
At least you have the personal courage and conviction to do SOMETHING.
Enlisting in the Army was the best thing to have happened to me. There are very few places left in the world where loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage actually means something anymore. If you believe in those things you are making a good decision even if it's a hard one. It won't be easy, it's a hard life, but you will look back on it and be proud of yourself which is something that most people can't do.
As far as enlisting as an 11C, all I can say as a former 96B is that combat arms soldiers deserve all the respect. The rest of the Army is there to keep you doing your job. You will literally be working as the tip of the spear with the rest of the Army supporting you. Combat arms is what it's all about.
----------------------------------------------------------
To the people responding with negativity here - there's a reason that this country is free. Even the soldiers in Vietnam or any other 'unpopular' war deserve respect because they did what they had to do to serve. You don't have the personal courage to do anything other than sit on the internet, complain, and spout hate about politics. It's your right to freely express your hypocracy - but you had better hope that other people will always have the courage to volunteer to defend you unless you want to do like the Europeans and most of the rest of the world and have mandatory military service for every citizen. And that means you.
Your criticism is hypocritical no matter what your politics are. Next time think about saying thank you for not having to serve yourself.

Of course America is worth fighting for. The war in Iraq has nothing to do with fighting for America. There is nothing to win in Iraq. Iraq was not a threat to the US. Iraq did not attack the US. Why did we attack Iraq? We attacked Iraq beause of their oil and by lying about WMD's There never was any evidence that Iraq had WMD's. The war was started by lies and deceit. Bush should be charged for war crimes because he misled the American people. The US isn't any safer now than it was after the 9/11 attacks. You can do more good as a civilian. You can fight for the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. George Bush said that the Constitution is just a piece of paper. He and Cheney should be impeached and both should be tried for war crimes and be removed from office. They both have blood on their hands.

America is not predisposed towards war. America will not back down when threatened. What about America is worth fighting for? See that little computer you typed your question on? You can thank veterans for the freedom to buy and use it. You can thank veterans for the freedom to ask you clearly Anti-American questions. You can thank veterans for the land your home sits on. Thanks to veterans, we have a country. Did you forget the Revolutionary War? The British were not about to give up control without a fight. Our ancestors gave them that fight. If it weren't for war, there would be no America. All the freedoms you take for granted, would not exist. America is my home. My ancestors fought in the Revolutionary War. We were in this country before it was a country. Why am I willing to fight for my nation, my people? The better question is: Why aren't you willing to protect your own home?.

The idea of America is certainly worth fighting for, but I'm not so sure about some of our citizens who seem to think we can wish away the enemy. For most who have served in the military, that period of their life is one they most proudly point to, and in no way do I think you're stupid for enlisting. I'd love to shake your hand and wish you the very best that life has to offer!

You are a very brave young man. Follow your heart and if it tells you to serve our country, you have my heart-felt thanks. I think America is worth fighting for.
My nephew is 25. He is in the Army. He and his friends have been to Iraq twice. They really felt like they accomplished good things there - helping build schools and things like that.
They did lose some friends. But that is the risk you take when you sign up to serve.
I do not think you are stupid at all. If that's what you want to do, I applaud your courage and your willingness to serve. My thoughts and prayers (and those of my family) will be with you. Good luck!! God Bless Our Troops.

Yes America is worth fighting for, but not the way you want to go about it.
Start fighting for it AT HOME.
Change the way your country is being run. It doesn't matter what your political leanings are just do something that will benefit the US and turn it from a corporate bloodbank back into the country that was once admired and respected throughout the world.
I speak as someone from a country who is an ally. But you are even losing us at the moment.
You don't need to pick up a gun to fight those who wish to bring down the US. Use your brain. It's a much more effective weapon.

Yes. Although the military will teach you alot and every soldier deserves honor and respect for serving there country. The Iraq war is a sham. Lives have been wasted and we now have so many amputees coming home. It is so sad. Nobody has explained this war to the American people. I don't see people caring in a few years. I see people not caring now. Do you want to be part of that? Train hard and join an elite force and become part of a rescue team.

Not only is America worth fighting for, it is worth dying for. If we don't fight for her when she's weak, how can we expect to make her strong again?
America needs our help and we need to support her so she doesn't fall under the threatening tide of misunderstandings, rash leaders, and a selfish populous. If we don't hold her up, America will crumble under the weight of reprobate baseness.

Absolutely. Unfortunately our reigning President has committed us to an openended peacekeeping operation in Iraq, a country that has no particular interest in peace between its factions, and a great deal of interest in killing the infidels who are currently parked on their soil.
Our president seems to think that having American soldiers blown up on a semi-regular basis by a faceless enemy is somehow protecting America.
Untill this madman is out of office, I would suggest learning a useful skill. Otherwise you are risking your life and limb for the fantasies of George W. Bush and for no other reason.
