Where did this superstition come from?

its believed that this started in the days when rome was built.
they believed that the mirror captured the soul or parts of it.
and if you broke the mirror your soul would be in dismay or lost ..
and the 7 year part came from that romans also believe the soul was renewed or reborn every 7 years...

if y brake a mirror i brake one every 7 years Ive lived a lot longer than the 10 years they gave me to live.is it bad luck or good luck I'm still here still braking mirrors.

Breaking a mirror may bring bad luck for 7 years. To "undo" this, take the shards of glass and bury them underneath the moonlight. In ancient times, the mirror was said to be a window to the viewer's soul. If that mirror were to break, it would take time (or 7 years) for that 'cracked' soul to heal as 'time heals all wounds'.

It got started because back in the day, mirrors were very expensive for the ordinary person to buy, so breaking one was just bad luck. It took too long to save up to buy another one.

It's an extension of symbolic magical influence.

For example you make a "vodou doll" in someone's likeness, then by abusing the symbol of the man you cause him ill via sympathetic mysticism.

The mirror "contains" your image so destroying the mirror is symbolic of self destruction.

I'm unsure which country the superstition originated from though.
