I actually went to a class about this. AND the class was given by guys doing time for MUGGING.

To simplify it... there are some people who just LOOK like they want to be mugged and others who do not. If you are walking around dreaming with your mind elsewhere and not aware of your surroundings... then you are a prime target for a mugger.

During the class, they showed a number of video clips of people walking in an urban setting. The muggers who were teaching the class pointed out what the victims were doing that told them "this person is just ASKING to be mugged".

To avoid being a target... here are some basic things you can do.

1) ALWAYS walk with your head up and erect... don't slouch or look like a 'mark' and don't walk with your hands in your pockets

2) ALWAYS have a place in mind you are GOING to... and then walk as if you have a purpose.

There are many other ways to keep from being mugged but, basically, if you look like you know what you are doing and where you are going... they will usually leave you alone

Don't carrything they would want to rob/mug your for. Usually they have been watching a victim and have seen a wallet loaded with money, a mobile, an iPod etc. If you've got nothing worth stealing they won't bother you.
Don't 'say' anything. They will say things to you to get a reaction - reply and you are giving them what they want. A lack of reaction equals boredom on their part and hopefully they'll move on.
The worst thing you can do it arm yourself in any way - they will see you as a threat and legitimate target.

Well, for starters, don't talk to would-be muggers. The only reason they're asking you what part of London you're from is to stall for time. They're counting on you slowing down or stopping to answer them, at which point they can mug you. It doesn't matter what your answer is, they just want you to stop and get distracted. You need to watch more gangster movies. Please stop talking to strangers.

Don't live there! the whole South East of England has a severe problem with violent crime so why not move somewhere safer?
