Depends on what you want from your government. I would guess most people on here saying yes to this question also supports the war in Iraq. How do you propose we pay for it?

Federal income tax, as an unapportioned tax, is unconstitutional. The United States Constitution strictly forbids a direct unapportioned tax on Americans. Yet that is exactly what is being done. So 1 penny is too much.
Not only is it unconstitutional but it doesn't pay 1 cent of the running of the government. Excise and use taxes and Corporate income taxes, all of which are constitutional, pay completely the expenses of the federal government. Your income tax simply pays the interest on the federal reserve notes we "borrow" from the Federal Reserve Bank. Which is the second, only to religion, biggest scam ever perpetrated on the American people.
With all that said, we pay nothing like they pay in other countries. We are lucky to have our Constitution and now we have to get the government to follow it.

As a member of the bottom 20%, I believe that the middle class and the wealthy are paying too much in taxes. Being educated I can see that the poorest pay no federal income tax and in most cases little or no state income tax. In a state like mine where property taxes are capped at 1.8% of income, the poor dont pay much of that either but the middle class and wealthy have to pay extra in order to cover the refunds that us poor folk get.
Just for the record, I am only temporarily poor, I changed careers and went back to school for a second degree. Being a single dad raising a child alone and wanting to get schooling done faster, I left a managerial job to take a sub teaching job that offer flexibility but lower pay. We make sacrifices so we can better ourselves. Well some of us do, others just whine and expect handouts.
The wealthiest actually pay the overwhelming majority of the federal income tax and actually far more in percentage of the total than the percentage of the total wealth they control. Libs like to overlook that. Corporations are just shareholders- who are shareholders? Everyone with a retirement account. Tax them more so people get less back from their investments- Nice!!!

I agree in the sense that since our government can piss away so much money as they are doing in Iraq frivolously and without need, or give away so much of it to other countries such as Israel, Egypt, etc...then it means the government has too much money on its hands.
But more than likely what it really means is that the tax payers' money is not being used wisely nor is it being used on things that actually make tax payers' lives better and give us a better more moral more productive society....things like education, loans and grants for college students, healthcare, medicare, social security, infrastructure, police and fire departments, border patrols, etc....
Sure you can make the case that americans are overtaxed, but the greater case is waste of tax dollars and lack of representation in terms of priorities of spending.

I believe the Federal income tax and the Medicare/SS are too high.
Particularly for people younger than boomer age.
Excessively so for the employers and the self-employed.
And when you factor in the number of church-goers who also pay a "tithe" and factor the community service potential of churches...
I'd say the government social programs and spending have failed across the boards.

And vt, the stats say that you have only a 14% chance of still being in the bottom 20% a decade from now - - good luck, not that you need it!

In the US, we are paying way too much in taxes. Most people never bother to count up what they really pay in total taxes.

I think the federal taxes are appropriate...
State, local, sales and property taxes, on the otherhand are a complete waste. Money in the lower levels of government is subject to the corruption, misuse and ignorance on the part of the spenders
