I think they should drop the Q&A portion of the show and replace it with a pretty cooter competition.

Yeah. These "beauty pageants" are basically T&A contests. If they're going to ask questions they should be limited to hair, clothes, make-up, boys and tampons. I guess they have to ask some "important" questions in an attempt to make it look "respectable". But, hey, why even bother? I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it but let's just be honest about what these pageants really are.

The official answer is that it gives the contestants, er, delegates, the opportunity to show her intelligence by speaking out about important social issues. I think the real reason they leave the interview portion in there is to give the viewers a good belly laugh when the contestants come out with a really stupid answer, like Miss Teen South Carolina.

I think a more pertinent question would be to ask them, if they were chosen as Miss Universe or whatever, what would be their agenda when they speak at functions? Everyone of them supports a certain cause, so that would be more important than anything else.
And I’ve met a Miss America once before she became Miss America. Albeit very, very beautiful, she couldn’t figure out how to use the recumbent bicycle at the gym! I had to show her!

Yes. The idea is to see how they answer vital questions under fire and check their knowledge of current events. But then we wouldn't have such joy like Miss Teen South Carolina to make us giggle. Did you hear the one who fell at the Miss USA (or whatever) pageant, say she wants to be an anchorwoman and also a model? She could run for President on the Republican ticket!

They only ask those questions as a way of saying, "These girls aren't just beauties — they care about the world, too!" But rarely has a pageant winner done anything to achieve world peace, 100% literacy, etc., etc.

Yes, it is stupid. Why do they bother pretending that they care what comes out of those girls' mouths? Are they trying to make themselves feel less guilty for being sexist? Just throw them out there on the runway in bikinis, maybe let them blabber on about how they're "virgins" and they don't ever leave the house, and be done with it.
Then when pics surface of these young women having the audacity to be young women and have boyfriends, everyone can act shocked... cuz, you know, they're not allowed to have sex unless it's with you. Then it's okay. But besides that, unacceptable!!!

Dumb questions like "how to save the world" are unnecessary. But i think the point is to see if they have a brain too. I don't think it works though.

I agree with Deidre about the attempt to legitimize parading physically perfect women around as if they're livestock.
Women who look like that and would enter a contest like that are the most likely non-disabled adults to not be as smart as a 5th grader.
It would be interesting to ask one of them what integrity and accountability means to them :)
