Because the U.S. doesn't put a high value on teaching about geography, foreign languages, or cultures outside its borders, since most Americans never travel outside the U.S. (except to visit Canada or Mexico).

I dont recall a major push in geography in my school days, really, we just had to know states and continents.
but, i know where it is, i quite enjoy knowing what i am looking at on a map, and what it borders.
