It would increase jobs, decrease crime, decrease court overload, increase tax revenue, free up resources like police to work on violent crime - because FACT IS a huge amount of the population is ALREADY DOING some type of drugs and with it legalized the ONLY change would be a positive one!!

Min age for purchase 18, with ID, etc, just like butts, and alcohol, TAX it and benefit. There is NO proof there would be an increase in crime or problems- it would be the same if not LESS, because people are ALREADY doing it like crazy.

Because the government is afraid of the outcome, even though they know they would make billions off it, and most Americans are just too stupid and ignorant to understand why this would be a good thing. The main reason is really morals. We have too much emphasis on morals and living good, this is just another example of people believing other people shouldn't have a choice in their life. Everything someone else does effects them, what? Not only would the legalization of drugs pull this country out of debt and create thousands of jobs, it would also bring billions to important programs that have been destroyed by government pork spending, tax breaks for the rich, and this immoral war. And the idea that just because drugs would be legalized that more people would be doing them is completely false, this never happened in the Netherlands or in any other drug friendly country, and it would not happen here. Most people are not going to start using drugs just because they are legalized, drugs being illegal if half the reason people want them. And yes it would put drug dealers out of business, unless they wish to compete with the government's prices, which would give the average drug dealer a minimum wage salary at best, this will not be an issue. The issue here is will the legalization of drugs destroy this country, create new addicts, and raise the level of violent crimes to pay for drug? Maybe. But I would guess not. Maybe if the government wasn't getting its as* kicked in the war on drugs for the last 30+ years I would have a different view. But the war on drugs is and will always be a failure, time has proven this already. Clinton's first US surgeon general had it right, but as soon as she spoke up she was fired, nice going Bill! There are drugs Im afraid of, Heroin is for losers, and Meth is just disgusting, but its choice people, and whether we legalize drugs or not, we will always have drug users, always! At the very minimum legalize pot, its a little more dangerous than cigs but alot safer and user freindly than booze. What is this obsession with the acceptance of alcohol and the demonation of pot? How backwards is this country?

Given the plethora of recreational drugs available today, it's absolutely essential to separate those which are relatively harmless, such as marijuana, from those which are extremely dangerous, addictive, and destructive, such as methamphetamine. I can see the argument for legalizing or at least decriminalizing pot, but making crack cocaine, PCP, and heroin available to the general public would be a disaster, particularly in a consumer culture such as that found in the United States.

What we need first is better education about the nature of psychoactive substances. How is the substance taken? How does it work in the brain? What are the mental effects? What are the physical effects? How long do they last? How addictive is it? What is the risk of overdose? How is it made? What is its history? And so forth...
These are the kinds of questions one needs to ask on a substance-by-substance basis when considering whether or not a drug should be reassessed from a legal standpoint.

the international's best drug cartel is the U.S. authorities and the CIA. Drug funds is filtered into the inventory markets. Then there is the reformatory commercial complicated. the wealthy, ruling type haven't any pastime in legalizing drugs. They get to arrest tens of millions of folk and delivers them a criminal record which effectively helps the authorities to music their each flow only as David Rockefeller continuously dreamed. do slightly internet seek for on the CIA and medicines and "narco money" and the NYSE's former chairman Dick Grasso and his assembly with Columbian drug leaders. once you go searching and word issues that do not seem to make any experience, do no longer overlook that they make proper experience to some major faction of the ruling type. no longer something only slips via the cracks. If something is occurring, this is because they prefer it to take position. "Capitalism is the valid racket of the ruling type." -- Al Capone

I respect your opinion but I don't agree with it. The only good thing about legalizing drugs would be that the weak people that do them can kill themselves quicker and no longer be worthless members of society. Look, I know what I've just stated was harsh but you have to understand where I'm coming from. I grew up around the stuff. Luckily I didn't fall into the trap and become a drug addict myself. Not saying I have/had a bad life but I know too many people that were messed up on drugs. The last thing you need to do is make these drugs legal. When it's harder to get, it's harder for them to do drugs. Do you know how many robberies there would be? To have drugs in all one place is like the devil's advocate. Some desperate person will come by and rob the place blind. Let's not encourage that! That doesn't even include the message that it would be sending to kids. You'd basically be saying "it's ok to be a drug addict". That's alarming!

And for those of you who think marijuana isn't a "real drug". Hmmm ask those that are on coke, speed, heroin, and pcp if marijuana wasn't the drug they started out doing! It's a gateway drug. People want to increase their high, hence the reason why they graduate to other drugs.

It would increase the amount of people who are addicted to drugs. They would turn to violent crime to feed their addiction. You would need to hire more cops to stop it. The addicts would also be going out into the world and causing accidents at work and on the road. Not to mention all the violence it would cause in the home with addicts beating up their wives and kids. Addicts would also lose their jobs and need to be supported as many would lose all their money and wind up on the street. Too many of them would overdose or become very sick and overload the hospitals. What were you saying again about that being a possitive?

I found out why drugs are illegal.

When people get addicted to something that causes a feeling, they eventually get to the point where they are spending all of their money on it, neglecting bills, and going down.

After the money is all gone, they start to sell all that they have...

After everything is gone, they start to steal money or things from other people...

That's what addiction to the feeling of drugs will cause. That's why it's illegal. No one ever buys just one dose and use it. It causes addiction.

If drugs were legal this place would become a wasteland, and drugs aren't the only thing people get addicted to. That's why prostitution is also illegal.

grumpy old man is wrong

Most people that use drugs (40 million Americans) do have jobs.

The only reason some will object, is because that will take money out of law enforcement and out of the hands of the courts. they are in this for the money, more than the well being of people.

The only thing that would happen is that law enforcement, the courts, and the penal system would have more resources to fight real crime.

Like when prohibition was repealed.

That's never going to happen, because the government legislates based on morality, not on reality. The government is on it's way to criminalizing everyone. Soon you'll need a license to have sex with your wife and everyone's house will have to be beige so as not to offend.

I agree with you 100%. Only you need to carry it just a little further.

All addicts must move to the state of Mississippi (or any other state of our choice). They cannot move from that state under penalty of execution. All drugs will be FREE.

Anyone caught outside the drug zone doing drugs in any fashion will be sent to the drug zone immediately....no exceptions.

There....free drugs.....free rent.....freed from society.
