I am self employed and work on a building site as a consultant.

I am sure they are going to get rid of me when they find out I'm expecting as I will pose too many health and safety issues for them.

As I understand they can do this because I am self employed.

When, legally, do I have to tell them? Are there any other duties placed on me as both pregnant and self employed?

For all of my other clients I can work from my own office. This is the only one where I work on their premises.

Does anyone have any information on the law relating to pregnancy for self-employed persons?

Haha! Thanks Claudiacake! I am going to keep the work from home for as long as possible. But yes - at least I will have a job to go back to!

Legally, I don't suppose you have to say anything until they ask you. Morally, you should tell them now and get the hell off their site, since there is an issue about liability should you injure yourself or the fetus. As an expectant mother, I would assume you would not expose yourself to any hazards that might damage your baby. but, since you want to put off telling your employer as long as possible....maybe not. At any rate, I don't think there are laws relating to pregnancy for self employed persons....what are you going to do, pay yourself maternity leave, and guarantee yourself a job when you return?

You don't legally have to tell them - eventually they'll notice, of course, but until then you can just keep quiet about it.
