Here's something I just thought of. Governments—orders of rule—today, from the beginnings of civilization, and even before were run by power-hungry, greedy, evil people who made themselves greater at another's expense, detriment, or demise.

All of them. Not one is left out. Bloodshed is plentiful on each civilization's hands. Lives were ruined and destroyed from continent to continent, ocean to ocean, all in the lust for might.

Knowing this, isn't it an impossibility that moral people, people who care and love and seek to uphold and uplift their fellow human beings, fit into governmental organizations?

Power corrupts and it is inevitable with a selfish species like humankind. The trade is rich with liars, manipulators, and cruelty.
So aren't we just hoping on the impossible? Do moral people belong in government? Should that even be expected?

And to tangerine who said "Nice guys finish last in politics"...What IS the purpose of politics? And if it's for personal power why all the routines with the masses of people purporting to serve their interests? Just become a warlord and save yourself the trouble.

I think moral people, those who have attracted followers, do not seek positions of power. They do not have a need for power. It is those of lesser moral character who have a need for power. It is sad. The people who would be good for a country are never in power in their country and those who only want power for powers sake are the ones who have the power. I know I am not saying this well but I hope you understand what I am saying.

I'll reinforce what Tangerine said. Nice guys do finish last in politics. Look at Kerry, McGovern, and Dukakis. All suffered
severly from swift boating. Why would anyone give that statement a thumbs down? To answer your question, I consider myself a moral person and I would never enter the political arena. Lobbying has gone on since the beginning of time and it's the cause of corruption. No politician is able to get through a career without having ethical scrapes on their record. Too much money changes hands.

The problem is not the apparent lack of morality in government but how such morality is defined by those in power. Such "moral" people will inevitably feel the need to impose their own brand of morality onto the masses, without regard to the differing customs and norms amongst society as a whole. Because of this, those who declare themselves to be "morally superior" are simply unfit to hold gov't office because of their obvious inability to set aside their deeply-held views and to work for the benefit of all.

Not ALL governments in history fit in the same "evil" category. Particularly, as we have evolved into a more civilized world. Many modern western governments are quite advanced and are in fact made up of many "moral" people.

Some definitely have wider moral boundaries, but not all.

Moral people do belong in government, but may find it a little more challenging when operating within a higher set of standards.

We should in fact, increase our standards to not only expect, but demand to be represented by those of a higher moral standard.

Moral and ethical people fight fairly, sothey often loose. It is very difficult for good people to gain office. Good people also expect others to act with a moral and ethical backbone and there are too many people, both in office and in the general population, that this anathema to.

My two cents...
If Mr. Smith goes to Washington, they will run him out of town on a rail. Or corrupt him with money like "they" do everyone else! ....sellouts. Money talks, Morals walk!
