How can young Pinays be reminded that they should be confident and proud of their brown skin?

Due to the media’s portrayal of beauty and perfection, young Pinays have been led to believe that white/Caucasian skin is the most beautiful. However, young Pinays should be comfortable in and be proud to flaunt their beautiful brown skin.

I grew up in a community where most of my friends are chinese. Hence, they wear the ivory color that somewhat is envied by most brown skinned pinoys. However, I have been taught and exposed well that beauty is merely subjective. To the extent that many of my suitors who were chinese as well did prefer brown skinned beauties. I am now married, to a brown skinned man. I have 2 beautiful girls - one fair in complexion and the other dark tone like me. Growing up in the Philippines was hard for my young little brown skinned girl. Just like me, her first few years was spent in a community where most of her classmates were chinese. The media's constant bombarding of "want-to-become-white-skinned-ads" added to her insecurity. No matter how much encouragement i would tell her that being a brown skinned woman is good ("just look at mommy", i would tell her) she would not hear of it. It was only when we left for the US and stayed there for a few years did she realize how beautiful she really was-inside and out! I was amazed at her new found confidence. There was no issues whatsoever about the color of the skin. She had classmates who were of african descent, japanese, chinese, latinos, and of course the caucasians! It was amazing to see all of them blend so well not fearing or belittling one because of color, and more so race. We are back in the Philippines now. And although we occasionally hear teases about color, i am glad that she carries that air of confidence that beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder and that color is nothing else but can be made as a sad, petty and mere discrimination of the true person that he or she really is. We have to be proud of our skin tone. For one, it speaks of our country as one big tropical archipelago. It tells of hardworking Filipinos unafraid to work under the heat of the sun. It is a color that many caucasians pay to have. But with media using famous actors and actresses constantly reminding us that the ultimate beauty is being white, i can not help but feel bad for those gullible individuals who will spend so much just to change their skin tone. What is truly important is the confidence that you carry. That alone permeates into what beauty really is - the belief in oneself that he/she is truly beautiful!

I think what is good is to reorient the Filipinos. In the US, they have magazines displaying black skinned men and women, and boy do they look good! They also modified their commercials featuring normal American sized people and not the usual stick figures. If we are able to showcase commercials like the shampoo commercials about beautiful hair that can be grown and sported by anyone, why can't we come out with commercials, magazines that feature beautiful brown skinned pinoys and pinays.

Since television plays a big part in today's pastime, and media can impact a person, then why not cater to building what is truly important and supporting what is really real - the brown skinned people, and not the white-skinned-wannabes.
