It would be a much duller place!:) Think of the many great things the South has contributed to the US. We have contributed great food (corn bread, fried green tomatoes, peach cobbler,etc.), great writers (Maya Angelou, Tennessee Williams, William Faulkner, et al.), great musicians (Tom Petty, Elvis Presley, B.B. King, et al.), and even some great Presidents (including George Washington, the father of our great nation).:)

Do you mean a scenario where say at the time of the Civil War the South ended up as it's own country? I'm going to assume that the South is still there...
I think by this point, there would be an EU like formation in the US and we would be on a common market. I think the South would be a lot poorer than the North because of the location of the industrial centers. In fact, I kind of think that the South would have eventually ended up functioning like as a colony of the North.
