They will quote Leviticus and Romans against gays, for example, but when it comes to explain why they don't follow Paul's instructions about women being quiet in the church, they have nothing but poor excuses. The same goes for references in the New Testament about slaves, or Old Testament references about how it is a sin to eat shellfish, etc. This is because they get comfort from picking and choosing bible verses that support their intolerant attitudes, and it makes them feel better (and they think it makes them look better) if they put on a "holy" front against those they oppose. A lot of it boils down to their self-righteous spiritual pride.

I can't believe people see the bible as a manual. I mean, come on! For example: when and where in your life have you ever benefited from attempting to part the waves or from trying to feed 5000 people with nothing but some fish (not very big) and a loaf? It would get you laughed at and some people would even say you were on drugs.
Sex shouldn't be related to the bible at all because apparently your "jesus" was born of an immaculate conception, no touching involved!
Religion in all its varied forms tries to dictate what its followers can and can't do. Utter crap!
How can you use something as a back up in a difference of opinion with someone when you cannot back up religion itself in ANYTHING it states.
That said, I respect every man and his dog for thier different beliefs, so every man and his dog should repect me for what I believe in. What I believe in is fact. By that I mean I believe in what I can see and what is proven. Evolution.

If you believe in something... you can only use it in an argument when prefaced with "I believe"... although, especially on yahoo answers... I find that people say " It IS this way or that because the bible says so..."
.. I find many "religious" people to be so because they feel more comfortable having life "prescribed" for them... It removes personal responsibility and the need for education on a subject before you comment on it... As wonderful as religion can be for people who use it to do good things... It seems more often to be used as a weapon... which is actually the opposite of the teachings of any religion I can think of...
.... sad...

Some people cant think for themselves and use a book of stories written down by men(with these men adding their personal spin)2000 years ago to justify their point. Since they havent formed their own opinion on something-they use the pre formed opinions of those who interpreted the bible as their own.

Yes. They believe what the Bible says to be true, thus they use it as proof for their arguement. I don't bash anyone, as all have sinned & no one sin is any worse than another. This disclaimer is what they must be forgetting in their arguement. Your sexual identity in itself is not a sin. Check your state laws, if you question this any. Interest towards a particular gender, even your own gender, is not a sin. Even then, people change over time.

You don't say which way. I ignore it. I never read anything quoting the bible because it's usually twisted by the person in his mind to justify the quote.
Or, the passage before and after alter the meaning and they conveniently left it out.

The Bible is an owner's manual. If your too lazy to read the instructions, isn't it dumb to insult the person who has? We all think we don't need to be told how to do something, but sometimes a little instruction or diagram never hurts. Except if its Ikea furniture, then God can't help you.

A lot of people just haven't studied the Bible, and truly understand what it says. They take what they are told it says as the truth and run with it. Blame it on the clergy who do not want people to think for themselves.

They use of the Bible as a weapon against homosexuals. Religious groups attack gays out of the need for villains and scapegoats. Attackers frequently use slanted interpretations of the Bible to justify hatred for gays, accusing them of being immoral or evil.

That seems to be the consensus! I wonder why so many people freaking care!?! Do they have nothing in their lives...so they must spew hatred and filth according to their perceptions of the Bible?!
