In our new house, you can see straight down into the drain in the shower. I know this not normal. There is a bad smell (sewage) coming from there. I'm not sure if it is missing the p trap or what. Me and my husband went down to the basement and looked. Didn't help because we really know nothing about that. But my guess is the plumbing for the shower and toilet are running together and there should be seperation somehow? I can't find anyone to help with this, and we've been living there almost a year. It's the spare shower, but I'd still like to open the door and use it sometime.

We do run the water in it every now and then. The smell will go away a little bit. But then it always comes back. And that's not normal. So it's not entirely from not being used. There's got to be a way to get rid or the sewage smell- find out what causing it if it's not the p trap.

It is easy to tell if there is a trap on the shower drain. First, take a flashlight and look into the drain. If you see water standing there is a p-trap there. Second, take a long, small rod that will fit through the slots in the drain and just ease it into the drain until it stops (do not force it), pull the rod back out. You can see the wetness on the rod, it should be wet about 4-6 inches up on the rod. If it is wet about 4-6 inches then you know there is a p-trap and it is holding water. Now, it is also possible there is a p-trap and it is busted. At some point in time someone may have tried to unclog the drain and stuck a stiff cable in the drain and busted the trap causing the water to leak out and give you sewer smells thus making the p-trap useless. Best of luck.

Shower P Trap

If you can`t see a p trap installed and the pipe is running straight down you will have to install a S trap. if the pipe runs off to one side you can use a P trap. If you do have a P trap installed but do not use the shower for a long time the water in the trap can dry up, and let gasses by. try pouring about a quart of water down the drain,.if you hear a splashing sound the p trap is probably there. You can go to Home Depot and look in the plumbing section on the wall display to see how it should look. If you don`t feel comfortable doing it, you need a plumber

Maybe there is a trap but it has gone empty from the shower not being used. Try running the water to refill it.

The P trap is not named for what it traps but for looking like a horizontal letter "P". The whole idea of it is to let you open the bottom (bulge in the letter P) to clean out blockages while still providing a water barrier to sewer gases. I mention its shape and its being open-able because that means it should be visible somewhere below the shower.

You likely have a trap. Check by adding water and see if remains (inside the pipe). If it does you have a dry trap problem caused by two possibilities. Long period of non usage (easy to determine). Water being sucked out because of a missing or plugged vent. Check your air vent, it is the likely problem.
