I had dinner at Longhorns last night and everything was great the service was fast and the food was great. The tab came to $50 and I left a $12 tip. Do you think this was to much/to little? And what would you have left?

The way I usually decide tips is like this:
If the service was great then I figure out 20% and add 2 dollars.
If the service was okay but not great than I figure up 10% and add 2 dollars.
If the service was terrible I leave 5% and a note on how to make it better.

You did good. I do the same thing by always leaving a couple of extra dollars on top of a good tip, coz it won't really make a big difference in my pocket if I leave $12 or $13 instead of $10 (which would be the normal 20%) and I know it will make up for somebody else leaving a great server a bad tip just because they are cheapskates.

I would have left $10. That's 20%. I leave 20% if my dining out experience was great. 10 to 15% if it was OK to Good. If my server had an undesired attitude and the food wasn't very good, I wouldn't leave a tip. I would pay the amount on the bill and leave.
I think a tip is something extra you give to people for doing a good job. for example, if a taxi driver gets you somewhere fast, give him a tip.
If the server was undesired but the food was great, I would leave a small tip and let the manager know about the server. Unfortunately, everyone has to split tips in that industry.

I think you left the right amount. I would have left the same thing. If I have really good or great service, I usually leave 25%. Average service I leave 20% and not so good service I still leave 15%. Waitressing is a very hard job and they make such low hourly wages.

I think 20% minimum if your service was great and you really enjoyed yourself. Service is 80% of your whole experience. Any by the way...if you get rotten service (not problems with the kitchen or bar) just plain rotten unfriendly service...make sure you leave zero for a tip. Why reward rotten service? A terrible server will never change if he/she still makes 10-15% tips.

You left a good tip that reflected your contentment with the service.
As a general rule an acceptable tip is in the 15% to 20% range and your tip was 24%.

How did you decide on $12 at 24%....just curious. I probably would have left $10 just because $12 seems like an odd number and it's 20% of the bill since etiquette dictates 15% to be the norm.

That tip was very generous. The average is 15% and you left 25%. I would have left about that if the service was good.

you left a little more than 20% which was a good choice if you had great service and quality food.

The minimal tip would have been $ 7.50 so if the service was extremely well, I probably would've left a $10 tip.
