After 1 hour. I understand that Tablature was a forerunner of today's musical notation - used in mediaeval times. Is this not so?

sheet music is on a 5 line staff and has notations as to rhythm, stylings etc and you have to learn what line represents what note. guitar tablature is a diagram of 6 guitar strings with numbers representing what fret to play on each string, much easier

They are just two different systems of putting music on paper. Musical notation is the older more traditional method with notes placed on 'ledger lines' and divided into 'bars'. There are usually two lines of music the 'treble clef' (for higher sounds) and the 'bass clef' (for lower sounds). It also has a 'key signature' which indicates which sharps and flats that you should play. This musical notation can be used for any instrument but it has to be interpreted (ie - you have to know how to make those particular sounds on your instrument)

Tablature is specific to the guitar and is more instructional, in the sense that it shows you exactly which note on which string to play.
