Just been stuck for hours in my car and got thinking, is the world a better place with cars.
Traffic jams, pollution, cost of using them, accident rates, parking issues, the country gradually being tarmaced over
Does the extra freedom outweigh the downsides.
Whats the alternative if we dont have them.

Well, they do get us around easy and when we want to go. I know people who ride the city bus, they say it a little inconvenient as you need to schedule around the bus runs. But, it much cheaper for them as they not have maintenance, insurance, fuel, taxes and license costs.
When everyone started the Global Warming what do we do talk. I sold my car just to say, sell your car! Everyone wants to talk, but, never do! I have not had a vehicle now for about 3 months I guess. I can usually catch a ride with someone when they head in my direction and friends call me up and ask if I need something from the store when they there. I have used a bus to travel out of State, but, it not run where I live for local stuff. I have saved more money in the 3 months I have not had my car Without paying insurance and fuel, I estimate I saving an extra $200-250 a month easy. I see my Sailboat on the horizon. :-p
Other alternatives are Bicycles, Electric Scooters and the old thumb in the air trick. A few here carpool, there a parking lot not far from where I live just for this. People meet there and leave a car or two and ride to work together. What has helped me, is good friends. When I get my sailboat I will take them all for a ride and not have to pay for fuel. ;-)

Hell yes, cars are a good thing! I believe that the automobile is one of the most influential inventions of all time. Perhaps the computer will take over my #1 spot in the future, but for now my favorite inventions are the combustion engine and the automobile. Every time I get in my Infiniti G35 I put the petal to the metal and pop the clutch, and I love how that engine purs. I actually enjoy getting up for work in the morning because I know that I'll get to push that whip for 30 minutes.

Car pooling with other people. Walking. Riding a bicycle. Or, if you live where there is public transportation like a bus or subway.

Good question. Cars are UNSAFE killing machines.
The alternative, if we're quick enough, is something a whole lot better. It is SAFE, CLEAN, low-cost and funky. It's speed is variable... it's made from 100% recylable super-strong materials and hey! Guess what? It's something car manufacturers could mass-produce to save us from oil peak.

Try doing without your car for a week and you will realise what a marvellous thing a car is.
I adore them, especially my Ford Mondeo.
