Your child is born with several soft spots allowing them to fit out the birth canal. These soft spots "fontanels" begin to close once born and continue to over the first 2 years of a childs life as the bones fuse together. Check out the site below for more information.

Depends on the baby. I was talking to the health nurse and she said that my baby's soft spot was large and wouldn't close till she was after a year old but that some babies close at 6 months or so.

Until the bone plates grow together and fuse - when the baby's brain is finished growing. I'm not sure there is an exact age. The soft spot is known as a fontanel.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fontanelle
Fontanelles are soft spots on a baby's head which, during birth, enable the soft bony plates of the skull to flex, allowing the head to pass through the birth canal. Fontanelles are usually completely hardened by a child's second birthday, and will eventually form the sutures of the neurocranium.

Oh man. That thing is so weird. I didnt like washing my son's head because of that (but I did) gave me that chills. He is 8mo and its closed up A LOT, its still there but not like when he was a tiny baby.
