It seems like riding lawn mowers seem to be made so cheaply nowadays no matter where i go to look at them. Can i still get a good new one that still fairly heavy duty (like the old ones)at this price and if so what brand?? I need a 42" cut(no bigger).

I have two craftsman mowers, one with a Kohler engine and the other is a Briggs. Both have auto transmissions. They are great dependable machines. They are made by AYP while most others are MTD. The engines and transmissions are the important parts, the cup holders and that kind of stuff is just fluff.

almost all movers in this price range are manufactured by MDT no matter what the brand says.all work and if you take care of them will 5 to 10 years.do not expect great quality in the price range you mentioned.

john deere, honda, and toro all make good ones. just be sure you get one that doesn't use the tecumseh engines. (many other brands use them and they rarely last long, but briggs and stratton engines are good and easily maintained and repaired).
