NO DOUBT
THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
it is one of the few musicals I loved the music from beginning to end. the male and female songs are so beautiful. besides the story is fascinating.

Wow, it's really hard to choose an absolute favorite but for the purpose of this answer I will say Rent. There are so many that I truly love but what I felt watching Rent was just awesome. All the emotions I felt and seeing one of the best love stories ever between Angel and Collins was so great. I also felt such hope that maybe now so many more people would get over their ignorance of homophobia and fear of those living with HIV and AIDS. Anyone who's been in the business and in theatre for a long time knows someone affected by that and in turn someone who has been spoken down to in ignorance. I had hoped that Rent would open some people's minds. I don't know about the rest of the country, but at least in my part of the world people seem a heck of a lot more accepting, but still not enough. I loved that no one in the show ever looked at another character and ran from them because they were gay or because they had HIV. They were just people living with their unfortunate circumstances that happened to be what they were, helping each other out and loving each other no matter what.

Someone else has already mentioned the difficulty of narrowing it down to just one. I saw Rent, knowing the plot and music and still when an emaciated Angel in a hospital gown is picked up with such ease at the start of Act II, I started crying right there on the spot. I've also directed a production of Godspell that was so moving, it has to be ranked up there but for drastically different reasons. And a production of Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris was one of the few times that an entire cast has been so "on" that the place was nearly white-hot with excitement. Even in going from one song to another, from sad to angry to the closing "If We Only Had Love," the cast AND audience were nearly on a different plane. And of course, Hello, Dolly! in summer stock is what inspired me to become an actor. The minute one guy banged on the floor and another guy popped his head out of a trap door, I said "THAT"S what I want to do!"

Up until a couple of days ago my list would have been
Sweeney Todd
Les Miz
Phantom
Into the Woods
Wicked
But I saw Harvey Fierstien's new musical, A Catered Affair, over the weekend and it is now at the top of my list.... and this show hasn't even hit Broadway yet! It is the most tender, loving story I have ever seen.

Based on the quality/difficulty of the music and the vocal parts, I'd say Les Miserables. I saw that on Broadway before the original run closed, and it was absolutly amazing.
But based on the emotional intensity of the piece and just the experience of sitting in the theatre seeing it, RENT on Broadway. I saw it in November of 2003, and it was literally one of only 2 theatre productions I've ever seen that actually brought me to tears (the other being 'Our Town'). When I went, it was at a time when they had one of the best casts they've had since the original.

Wicked and Legally Blonde: The Musical, because the songs are catchy and you can't help but like them. And because they ending of Wicked makes me cry. VERY rare! : )

probably mamma mia. i was a bit unsure as to whether I'd enjoy it or not, especially because some abba songs really annoy me, but it was absolutely hilarious, and has a good storyline with great acting. and yes, i even enjoyed the abba songs. the only musical ive been to where people have actually got out of their seats and danced at the end.

My favourite is " The Phantom of the Opera" because when I saw it I couldn't believe that they could bring out so many emotions by singing and acting on stage ! The music brings goose pimples...it's so amazing !! It makes you feel a part of it...as if it was actually happening and not being eacted...

I would have to say High School Musical just because it makes people mad that we vote that as a musical, times have changed and so has the definition of a musical.
