Well, depends what you mean by mistaken. Can some *** say you're bipolar because of that, yes. But bipolar is a pretty unique diagnosis because of the giddy manic stages. PMS, or really PMDD if we're discussing this level of severity, may make one moody, but you'd generally level off the rest of the month, without the manic highs.

Bipolar is frequently misdiagnosed, often as Severe Major Depression, but PMS isn't a frequent result.

I think that can happen when diagnosed by people who are not experienced in this field. Any expert would know better.

I became very, very depressed a few years ago. I started worrying about being bipolar because of a few things I had read. I went to my regular medical doctor. We talked things over and I asked if I could be bipolar. He laughed (in a kind way) and said, "No, you are just very depressed." He told me not to believe everything I had read and not to underestimate the effects that severe depression can have on a person. He knew immediately (even not being a mental health professional) that I was not bipolar just because of a few symptoms. This is the kind of doctor we all need to see - kind, understanding, knowledgeable and someone who LISTENS.

I think it happened more in the past when medical technology wasn't very advanced. In fact, women with anorexia were just diagnosed with hysteria back then, because they didn't know what else to call it. I think these days, enough is known about endocrinology and all of its associated disorders, so the women probably aren't lumped into the bipolar category as much.

I read that they do blood tests and even a MRI of the head to rule out other causes of the symptoms before they make the diagnosis of bipolar.
