I personally thing that military standards should be standards. If men are required to abandon the piercings and get a buzz cut, so too should the women.

Short hair in the military goes back a long, long time. It was actually done for good reason, but the reasons have evolved over time.
1. It discourages lice and helps with hygiene.
2. Longer hair provides yet another lock on point for the enemy. In hand to hand combat it was easy to grab a handful of hair or beard and control your enemy.
3. It was also done to promote a team or similar quality environment. The military was about working as a unit and not about standing out from everyone else. Hairstyles are considered a quality of vanity. That is the last thing the military wants.
The short haircut has been around the American military much longer than women have been allowed in any combat promoting environment. This is something that will probably take much longer to evolve.

It goes back to the original idea of shaving ones head in the military, it eliminates individuality. Thus making it easier to command such a large number of people. It also is with perception. Long hair is over perceived as loose and sloppy, and as you know the military has no place for either. Women however are just now being placed into the military so some things need to be looked at again. In today's world, yes it is sexist, however the military is not a democracy, it is there to uphold democracy, so really the "sexist" idea does not relate to our common "business' world impression. To make things "fair" it would be a good idea to look at cutting all females hair to a said length and making that mandatory. It doesn't need to be shaved, but a uniform haircut is need none the less.

Because of it being the military, they're sexist. I'm sure it didn't start out as a women being allowed to have long hair but a "by god they can't have short hair, they'll lose their femininity." But yeah, if you are able to keep your hair out of the way and wear earrings that fit the already established guidelines then you should be able to.
Good luck with that though.

I love it when guys wear earrings and have long hair. But we have a sexist society. You can work for yourself and do more of what you want. I know quite a few guys who wear an earring away from work, and among guys who are artists, quite a few of them grow out their hair and wear what they like.
In some Native American cultures, men still grow their hair out (I've stayed near a couple of reservations in the West and all of the men I saw in these small isolated communities had long hair. I thought it was gorgeous, personally).

Amen!
I spent a significant amount of time in my youth arguing that school dress codes that mandated a certain hair length for boys while allowing girls to do pretty much anything they wanted with theirs was blatant gender based discrimination.
Last time I checked schools with dress codes still mandate male hair length.
That being said, I can see how in the military it can be a safety as well as a personal hygiene issue. It would be a real problem if your buddy got blown up because you held things up by getting your pony tail stuck on something. It's also pretty darned hard to keep long hair clean in the field.

Well it's not sexist or discriminatory when it depends on your position with your job. For example I work for a major law firm, so certain braid styles would be inappropriate for work, or even earrings. I cannot wear some pairs of my earrings to work as well. As for military or police the same thing, people have to present an image because of the type of job they are doing and the people he/she would come into contact with. Employers must obtain a reputation and image and they expect their employees to support such.

It is because you are in the military. They have the stupid rules. If you were in main stream society you could do what ever you wanted.
You should challenge the rule. If the women get to keep their long hair and earrings, you should be able to as well.
Know first from where you speak.

Women have had longer hair and worn earrings far, far longer than men have, and are much more likely to be able to know when it's safe to let such things be exposed, and when it's not safe.
The military is not 'discriminating' against you ... it's merely following RULES that were laid down long ago ... BEFORE World War ONE ... but you may wear earrings and long hair when you don't have a 'job' that has different rules ... and there is no LAW that you must serve in the military, so it's your CHOICE ...
