As Far as Restaurants go: You really should eat on top of Mt. Washington at least once - the restaurants up there are a little pricier and very formal - if that's not what you're looking for then steer clear. I'd recommend Isabella's or Monterrey Bay on Mt. Washington. The Downtown Cultural District is home to a lot of Great restaurants too - Six Penn Kitchen, Trilogy, and Nine on Nine. All great - Nine on Nine is probably the best restaurant in the city.
If you just want bar food eat at Fat Head's - 18th & Carson Street in South Side - HOT wings and chicken sandwiches, great burgers, homeade chips and more than 40 beers on tap.
As far as nightlife I wouldn't recommend the Strip District. But it's based more on personal taste. Most of the clubs, in my opinion, are trying to be things that they are not. They're these Vegas impersonations with overpriced bottle service and a kind of annoying atmosphere.
Station Square is a complex of Chain Restaurants (Hard Rock, Hooters) and a few Clubs - it caters to a more touristy crowd. Matrix is Popular as a dance club - there are 4 rooms with different themes. Buckhead Saloon has live bands on weekends and cheap drinks til 12. Palm Bar is smaller and more formal.
But the South Side is the heart of Pittsburgh nightlife - there are literally over 100 bars. It's mostly college bars but there is definite variety. Smokin' Joe's is the best every man bar. Great beer selection. Clean but not too clean -it is a bar. That is at 20th and E Carson St.
Town Tavern, Diesel, and Jimmy D's are the more popular dance places in the south side.
Jack's is a popular dive bar - always been there - open 365 days a year - always a crowd of all ages.
Elixir and Nakama are more popular for drinks in a lounge type setting - more popular with a post college, more refined crowd. Nakama is actually a Sushi and Hibachi Restaurant with a larger bar - located at 17th & Carson.
The North Shore area around the Sports Stadiums is also home to about 15 bars. All of which are very new and within walking distance of each other. They're nice. But is NICE what you're really looking for? It's not where I'd send someone to get a true feel for Pittsburgh.

Try the Southside and the Strip District. There are some great bars in the Southside; really affordable drinks, great atmosphere, etc. The Strip District has more clubs such as Deja Vu and one on the Allegheny River. It's a different scene than Southside, which is mostly just bars. Station Square also has a really great club, can't remember the name of it. It's like a combination of 3-4 clubs in one, each with a different theme.

Go to the area they call the Strip District. No- it's not "strippers." It's a strip of land that used to be all warehouses, and has been converted to really cool shops, restaurants, and nightclubs. Make sure you eat a Primanti Brother's sandwich!
