Cells cannot grow too big because large cells would have these problems:
1. Diffusion is too slow to move materials into and out of large cells efficiently. Materials might not reach the middle when needed.
2. The DNA in the nucleus is enough to run a small cell, but the DNA cannot be copied quickly enough to direct the activities of a large cell. It's rather like having a lab with 15 students and one teacher. Students would be able to ask questions and have parts of the lab initialed by the teacher without much problem. But one teacher is not enough for a lab of 80 students. The teacher can not get around quickly enough to help everyone and answer questions.
3. As the cell grows bigger, the surface area to volume area ratio becomes smaller. That means that a big cell doesn't have enough plasma membrane on its surface to allow entry to enough needed molecules for the inside of the cell, nor is there enough membrane to take care of transporting materials out of the cell.

It's called contact inhibition. When a cell grows large enough to touch its neighbors, it stops growing. Cells that lack this quality are cancerous--they keep growing and don't stop. If you want the details of why, put contact inhibition into your browser--it's a little complicated.
