Faith. My reason to believe this is that I ask my extremely intelligent and educated husband why he believes in God and he says "because I have faith" he does not give me any other reason, he believes in evolution but at the same time he refuses to think about WHY he is a Catholic. I know why, it is because his parents took him to church from an early age and because he has been taught always to never question his faith.

It depends on what you are searching for. For me I went to church as a child because I was told to go. I had an interest in knowing about God but not a clue what He was all about. I felt that throughout my early years I sensed a strong lack of fulfillment in the church I attended.
As an adult I wanted to know this God who "loved me" as those bumper stickers say! When I would go to various churches or be around people who were talking about God I would certainly "reason" in my mind whether this met my criteria of truth and sincerity. I finally resolved myself to the fact that there most certainly is a God and He is all knowing and all powerful and I could put my faith and trust in Him and Him alone! I realized that mankind is far from flawless and you can only trust people just so much. My favorite thing was, once I put my trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, I had a strong desire to read this book called the bible, it seemed that the words leaped off the pages and saturated my being. I found that "true love" that I yearned for all my life and internal peace. On an ongoing basis I look to the Lord in every situation every day. He has been my constant companion thru the good, the bad & the ugly. My life is not perfect or without struggles and pressures, on the contrary but I have a source within that has caused my faith and love for Him to grow. So to sum it all up, initially by reason, committment by faith.

Neither...and both
Most people don't think about their beliefs very much. They just absorb them while growing up in their culture. So they have not taken a step of faith, nor have they thought it through with reason. I think the "neither" is the most common, especially when you are talking about countries like Saudi Arabia where "100%" of people have the same religion. Is that even possible, really?
For people who are serious about their faith, the answer is both. It is not possible to put your trust in something irrational for most people. So first, they think, "does this make sense?" and "is this reasonable and possible" before they take the leap of faith. That is why we don't have people putting their faith in Zeus anymore. The Mount Olympus thing isn't very realistic. However, the faiths that are historic, with a real person and such are often very reasonable and they make sense.

People should make decisions on religion based on themselves as in what works for themselves. That in my opinion beats reason and faith. When there is a personal connection between the person and what ever decision he/she makes. Religion is after all about God, God defys science or reason because there are things that cannot be explained in human understanding. Therefore faith is efficient but it is impossible to please God without Faith.

It was faith , handed down through generations and generations. It was accepted and was not challenged as many other issues in the universe were accepted without challenge. Most importantly , this faith in religion was compunded by preaching of good character and good moral values.
But then , when this faith started to become 'blind' faith and the religious groups exploited the blind faith , then the educated and thinking people started to move away from the religion . They started to question their own faith in the religion and the moral/character building took a back seat.Today we find 80% of the people , in the west , have lost faith in religion and churches are empty.

I made my determination to grow to be a Jehovas Witness by ability of reasoning. I studied the Bible for a protracted time, friendly myself that what i became listening to became real and provable. faith follows reasoning. we ought to constantly be like the Boreans "heavily reading the scriptures daily as to if those issues have been so" Acts 17:11. faith may be blind, you basically ought to look at countless the flaws or people that folk placed faith in. whilst faith is significant so is sound reasoning.

Religion is founded by faith not reason. Faith is believing. You believe but you do not know(knowledge or reason). A knowledge means you see or experienced it yourself. Faith means someone has told you and you believe. That is why the saying, "to see is to believe" is a wrong statement.
For example, a close friend has told you that your bf was seen kissing another woman. You would believe (faith) because she is your trusted friend, but if somebody who is not close to you would tell you, you won't believe. another thing is if you see it yourself that your bf is kissing another woman, you don't need to believe anymore. You already have personal knowledge because you see it yourself. Religion is passed on to us by generations, you do not have personal knowledge, but you believe , that's faith.

Oh, definitely by faith. Religion relies on faith because so little to do with it can be proved. You just have to believe.

Faith is based on truth and is preceded by knowledge.
Until a person gains knowledge of the truth he/she can have no faith.
Alma 32:21 "Faith is not to have perfect knowledge of things; therefore if you have faith you hope for things which are not seen, which are true.:
Faith unto Salvation centers in the Living Jesus Christ.

We know so little and believe so much.
Most our decisions are made with a little reason and a lot of faith.
Can't imagine why Religion would be different.
