I think so. If not, they must be pretty boring.

Sorry. The Mormon church outlawed polygamy a hundred years ago. They had to in order for Utah to be admitted to the US as a state.

And so it is very much a fairly mainstream church, the only religion native to the United States. Though they're strongly evangelical, they stay out of born-again politics, hooray. They have an extremely strong tradition of self-reliance and of service to whatever community they're living in.

"Big Love" was just another silly premise for a television show about a weird family that tries to adhere to a conventional lifestyle, not unlike The Addams Family.

If you happen to get to Salt Lake City, go downtown and take the whole Mormon tour. It's a mixture of the extremely conventional and extremely strange, as all religions are.

Being an Ex LDS (mormon) member I can tell you that polygamy is no longer practiced in the mormon religion. Those who do are member of The FUNDAMENTALIST Later Day Saints (Fundamentalist Mormons) there is truly a difference there. FLDS, believes things totally different from the LDS religion. Children marrying uncles and so forth. It truly can be a horrible thing. The children and wives don't know any better because that's all they have ever known. They live in large "foundations" that are usually surrounded with a fence that is often topped with barbed wire or electricity. All the children are home schooled, and those who do go out in public usually to buy things such as food or fabric are the older women and they tend to keep to themselves. Most everything they have is hand made, including there food. In the LDS religion they believe that women are just as capable as men, and children should be cherished. They do like large families, but that is because they want to spread the love. When is comes to the social aspect of Mormons they are very nice and very helpful. There was jut too many things that they believe in that I could not accept. They don't have too far out there ideas about The Lord, but it's in the subtile differences that I couldn't handle. I've never watched the show, so from the info I gave you, you can decide if it's an accurate depiction of the FLDS church. Also remember it is ONLY the FLDS church that practice polygamy. Most of the majority of mormons are LDS.

I don't know anything about the show, but TV & movies virtually never portray religious people anything close to accurately, because the people making the shows are usually completely clueless on the subject. So the chance is pretty slim that it's an accurate depiction.
