I've heard that starting your own religion is a good money earner; but might not be good for your immortal soul.

You need something that people want, but haven't got or can't get hold of easily. Make sure it's not just something you think they ought to want - do some research before you start.

What are you good at? If you're a performer of any kind, get yourself registered at a local entertainment agency. If you like mending things (eg: bikes), you could consider that as a business; or if you can teach anything (computing, musical instrument, dance) you could set up a class.

Do you like people? If not, stay out of the service industries where being nice to people all day long is a requirement. But if you're everyone's best friend, then running a cafe or similar, or selling newspapers (shop or street - depending on your startup capital) might keep the wolf from the door.

If you want to do retail, find out how easily people can get hold of what you'd like to sell (or something similar) on eBay, and for how much, before you fill your spare room with it.

I'm sorry I couldn't point you at anything precise - I don't know your talents and skills - you do.

Whatever you decide to do, make sure you market yourself. Use MySpace or Freewebs etc to build a free website, and do an internet search for free directory listings that you can link to your website, and advertise it on any leaflets or cards you produce. Many people feel happier handing their money over to someone they can find some information about first.

I've attached a link to a business plan template (Word doc) that should help you to think things out properly.
Good luck!

SEO is a big decision that can potentially improve your site and save time, but you can also risk damage to your site and reputation. Make sure the content is good and refresh.
