If you have an XP disc put it back on. Might be a good idea to back up some important files just in case. You could then re-install Vista. From what everyone tells me it is wiser to stick with XP for a bit longer as Vista has many glitches not yet sorted.

Can my computer run a 64-bit version of Windows?
To run a 64-bit version of Windows, your computer must have a 64-bit processor. To find your computer's processor speed, do the following:
1. Open System by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking System.
2. Under System, you can view the processor type and speed.

All retail variations of Vista, inclusive of advancements, use the comparable DVD with a distinctive label. you may boot to an improve DVD and not employing a concern, by way of fact there is not any actual distinction between the retail disc and the improve disc. while you are attempting to place in the "30-day trial" of Vista, you need to do so from booting, not interior domicile windows. (this additionally will verify the laptop does a sparkling format. do not attempt to "improve" or you will have issues). in case you may not boot to the DVD, bypass into BIOS and alter the boot order so your DVD-ROM is first. that would desire to look after it.
