I just had mine yesterday. It lasted three hours. You should not eat anything for 12 hours prior to the test. follow doctors orders as there are alot of women who are getting gestational diabetes, and do not know about it.
best of luck to you.

You cannot eat or drink anything 12 hours before your glucose test, doing so will cause a false positive for gestational diabetes.

It really depends... you need to call your doctor to make sure. I have a 1 hour test... I am supposed to eat something light, but starchy 3 hours before. Then one hour before I have my blood drawn, I have to drink the glucose stuff within five minutes. Then, I simply go and have my blood drawn. You don't always have to fast.

I have to go in for that on my next appointment. The dr. told me yesterday that I could eat because it was a new kind of stuff you have to drink and it wouldn't affect anything on the 1 hour test. He said with the longer 3 hour version of the test you cannot eat. I would check with your dr. to be sure.

I've had three pregnancies, and three glucose tests. There were never any restricitions...and this last time, we were at McDonald's playland first (must burn off energy from my kids before any waiting room, especially on a rainy day! :)), so my pregnant appetite downed a Big Mac meal...:) Negative each time.
Your OB/lab may have a different policy, so if in doubt, check first. Call your dr's office ahead of time.

It depends. If it's the 1 hour test, then you can eat, but don't eat too much( or even sweets) an hour or two before the test. If it's the 3 hour test then you need to fast( but follow your docs instructions)

I went without eating, b/c I had heard that, and my doctor never told me anything....
when I got there, and hadn't had anything to eat, it messed up my test results...
B/c I was supposed to have eaten..
The drinking one you are supposed to eat, the blood one you are not
Think of it this way, they want to test your blood sugar on normal terms.. if you dont eat, your results will be different. After I took it without eating, my doctor said to def eat, just dont have a big piece of chocolate cake right before.

my OB told me that I had 2 choices: either fast or eat a protein only meal no more than 2 hours before the test. so my breakfast consisted of eggs bacon and a glass of water. if you get sick to your stomach easy, i would eat. the stuff they make you drink is SUPER sweet and made me feel sick, even with food.

It depends on the type of test you are given. Your doctor should have told you if he or she wants you to eat first. I had one test when my doctor wanted me to eat breakfast, and he told me what he wanted me to eat, then another test later which was fasting. If your doctor didn't tell you if he/she wants you to eat, I would call the office to find out for sure first.
Good Luck.
