I don't believe they are SO stupid to accidentally or otherwise fail to ban steroids while McGuire and Sosa were coincidentally attracting whole new fan and sponsor demographics.

In my opinion, they did know about steroids but refused to believe in them//didn't do anything about them. However, that's just my opinion.

Suspected, probably.

But know? Probably not, through deliberate avoidance.

Look, Seligula is a former used-card salesman. By law they are not supposed to lie about their merchandise, but if they are simply ignorant (of, say, the crease in the frame, or the leaky engine seals), they have plausible deniability. They cannot lie about something of which they are unaware.

For that business and some others, it is operationally important NOT TO KNOW a lot of details. The lesson carries over to baseball rather easily.

It was exciting baseball, it was popular (and profitable) baseball, and one of the fundamental truths of baseball is "never mess with a winning streak".

Not saying it was right, just what it was.

ps. Hint: "McGwire".

I will second the statements of Chipmaker and add one additional comment. MLB did not then and does not now have the ability to make a unilateral decision involving drug use. Whatever plan is implemented has to be as a result of a MLB and Players Union agreement.
