when it turns into sleep paralysis.

It starts with a ringing noise in your ears, but like coming from inside, gets louder and louder until a fear grips you - the first time you won't know what is to follow. Then you find yourself lying there, wanting to move - your arm, your leg - but just can't. You know you are in your bed, mentally awake, but it's like the brain impulses cannot transmit to the parts of the body. And the maddening thought: what if I won't get out of this. Then every time you hear it coming on, you stand right up, open your eyes wide and fight it back so that it does not overtake you.

There was a series of 3 or 4 instances in my mid-20's and, luckily, it hasn't happened since.

I would say when things begin to get out of control and you start to feel afraid. I've had dreams where things should be scary, but I don't feel scared. I don't consider those nightmares. Just the ones that you wake up feeling too scared to close you're eyes again are the ones I consider nightmares.

A nightmare is a dream that makes you feel scared or worried. In ancient times the mare was a mythological creature believed to actually run around at night and give people bad dreams - like a Sandman gone evil.

When the bad effects of a dream survive to our waking state, it is a nightmare.

It has been many years since I had a noteworthy nightmare, but last night I had one. Late last evening I learned a friend battling cancer is in his last days. Then I dreamed another dear friend had died in of all things a terrorist attack. I awoke with a heavy sense of dread, hopelessness and chaos. It took a few moments to clear the fog and inventory the real from the dream.

Too bad all of the bad news was not just a dream.

You can have nightmares in the day time. What happens is your subconscious mind will occasionally expose your private fears to you, running out the consequences to termination. as if trying to challenge you to solve it.
Fears are things we have no solution for, or things we are not satisfied with the resulting termination.
For instance, If I were to get hit by a truck, while pushing my friend to safety, I would not be dissatisfied with the result, so I would not fear the result of death. by the same token, I would not be satisfied with the method of death, and I would be afraid of the pain. my mind will catalog that unresolved issue, and attempt to find resolve for it when I sleep, or even in-between things, while walking on a treadmill someplace. If It couldn't find resolve, It would be a nightmare.

When your long time goal is accomplished and you realize it is not what you thought it would be. Its like when a fictional character wishes on a magic lamp for a ' Chick with long legs who agrees with everything he says' and he gets a baby ostrich who repeats everyhting he says (I heard that in a joke, LOL).

It really someone who maybe through lust or selfishness strives toward something that, in their opinion, is the ultimate accomplishment (Like trying to seduce a man or winning the lottery) and then they realize that it doesnt bring them happiness like they though it was. It actually brings them more trails and tribulations. I just watched a documentary called 'The Curse of The Lottery' and thats exactly what it was like.
