My parents are originally from Kerala but, I grew up in US. So, I have traveled to Kerala as a tourist. Personally,I think Kovalam beach with its black sand & the 'back waters of Allepy' are worth giving a shot. You can rent a 'house baoat' in Allepy which includes fresh cooked food on the boat itself .......this will give you an oppurtunity to taste authentic Kerala food (inc. seafood).

I feel that netpal has already covered the famous ones well. I read a few helpful member contributed travelogues and a feature i think on some kerala destinations on Oktatabyebye.com and found them fairly good and insighful. as this site essentially is for travel enthusiasts like us to find and share travel information, i've found the stuff there both real, helpful and credible and do my bit by contributing back some of my stuff. you could drop in and see if you find something useful there. BTW some good pictures too.

Kovalam about 15km from Trivandrum is a beautiful beach resort.
Varkala, about 50km from Trivandrum is also a good beach resort.
Alappuzha is a good place for enjoying backwater and to stay in boat house.
Cochin is a nice tourist place and commercial place.
Kanyakumari (located in Tamilnadu) is only 50 km from Trivandrum. It is also a nice tourist spot to see the sunrise and sunset. Speciality of this palce is that you will be able to see the Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean and Arabian sea from a single spot without moving even a singe step.
