I remember seeing a tv show about female sexual infidelity and the frequency of children being brought up by men who were not their biological fathers - much of the time without the 'father' being aware.

It was sobering stuff for men and slightly embarrasing for women.

The claims being made by the program, were based on the findings of a scientific study. I can't remember the name of the study. Can anyone help me?

Perhaps it was named the Delphi study. My sibling and I do not share the same father, the negative impact this had, when my sibling was told(when he was 12) has exacted irreparable damage within the entire family. It's inexcusable, but forgivable.
Chances are that the Delphi study may or may not be the term you seek. It was the name of such a study I attended.
The "cheater's" persona usually is that of a self-indulgent, self-seeking individual, that gauges their self worth by how many different people they can get laid by.

It should be embarrassing for whoever the perpetrator was or is. Such behavior exhibits self-centredness and poor taste. In all fairness, if one feels the "need" to pursue such behavior outside the marriage, the following holds true, "Close the existing chapter before opening another".
